The shell is a soft-touch moulded plastic that does not feel like a gadget you win at a fair. Buttons are raised, tactile and easy to find without looking, which matters when your dog is already lunging. The ultrasonic emitter sits behind a metal grille next to the LED, and the whole nose section is recessed so the emitter never lands face-down on a pavement. The wrist strap is stitched webbing, not a plastic loop, so I could hang it on the lead and forget about it.

Keep the emitter grille free of pocket lint — a blocked grille is the most common reason one of these devices suddenly seems weaker.
